Caverns & Cake

Those were just two of the highlights from our fun weekend!  Wyatt was ready for the outdoors.

We have a to-do list for our stint in Tallahassee, and we crossed one off when we went to Florida Caverns State Park.  I went when I was a little girl, but didn't remember much except seeing bats.

Even though we weren't lucky enough to see any bats, the tour was fun!  It was a 40-minute walk through different chambers.  There was alot of ducking involved, but nothing strenuous.  A bonus was that Wyatt was really well behaved!  He even said "this is fun!".  I think it helped that there was a 4 year old on the tour with us that he could stalk have fun with.

After the cavern tour we went to check out the Blue Hole, a spring in the state park.  The water was beautiful, but cold!  A few brave kids jumped on in.  We didn't bring our swim suits, darn.

We also had a great meal at El Patron in Tallahassee.  Is it "authentic" Mexican food, probably not.  But it was delicious.  Wyatt wanted to sit by all by himself in the big boy seat... that lasted a few minutes before he wanted to "walk a bit".  He cannot sit still!  The full review is coming soon.

Last but not least, I was a bad girl for eating cake for dinner one night.  Jay spoiled me by getting some yummy looking slices at Publix.  The carrot cake and chocolate cake really hit the spot.  We devoured the cake while we watched Nightcrawler on Netflix.  Jake Gyllenhaal was amazingly creepy in this film.  The fact that he didn't get nominated for an Oscar baffles me.

See any good movies this weekend?  Eat any good desserts?

Weekend Recap

Hope everyone had a great Father's Day weekend!  We sure did.  It started out with an amazing delivery from my sis.  She sent us a Colorado food goodies box that was full of awesomeness.  I've tried lots of those yummy items already.  Everything so far has been delicious... especially the Blueberry Rhubarb Jam and the Coconut Oat Bar.

Saturday was a hot, hot, hot day!  But I guess that's Florida for ya. We spent most of our time indoors.  One of our highlights from the day were the Carne Asada Tater Tots from Taco Libre.  Talk about decadent!  It was HUGE and delicious.

On Father's day we headed out early to go to the beach.  The drive to St. George Island was beautiful.  Wyatt was super comfy and really enjoying the view.

I loved seeing my boys having so much fun in the water!  Wyatt loved jumping in the waves with his daddy.  He also spent lots of time moving sand from place to place with his "blue shovel", which apparently got washed away because I couldn't find it... grrr.

After a couple hours we were ready for lunch, and went to the Blue Parrot, one of the only restaurants on the island.  It was good!  I scarfed down some fish tacos and Jay had a blackened tuna blt.  Wyatt had a pretzel appetizer that we brought with us and some grouper fingers.  I can't believe how well behaved he was considering it was his usual nap time.

We got home around 3 and spent the rest of the day hanging out at home after a quick trip to Whole Foods.  Jay got a tasty dinner of steak and mashed potatoes... which he made himself, hehe.  I'm such a great wife to allow him to cook his own meal on Father's Day :/

What did you do for Father's Day?  Any special food requests from your husband or dad?

Sidecar Saturday

We had another great date night in Tallahassee last weekend at Sidecar Gastrobar.  We arrived around 7:30 and there were a couple of free tables.  After snatching one up, we were quickly greeted by our server who brought over water.  It was much needed for me.  I'm always SO thirsty.  We quickly ordered some tasty appetizers.  First up, something I have never ever had before... duck wings.  The Thai Duck Wings were amazing!  They had a sticky, spicy and slightly sweet sauce that was perfection.

Our 2nd appetizer was the made to order Chicharrones.  Yes to fried pork skin!  They were addictively good and super crunchy.  The only issue was that some pieces weren't as well seasoned as the others.

Now for the entrees!  We split both of them (as usual) so we could taste everything.  The scallops were cooked perfectly and had a great sear. I wasn't too sure about the mashed potatoes as an accompaniment, but Jay loved it together.

Then I dug into the shrimp and grits.  We have been on a shrimp and grits roll lately, trying them whenever they are on a menu.  These were very unique!  It was a tomato based sauce with these awesome crispy bits of sausage.  The cheese grits also had more flavor added to it than the usual grits in this dish, maybe worcestershire sauce was one?

Alas, no dessert on this menu!  But I was super stuffed anyway.  I definitely want to come back to try their sandwiches, they all looked amazing.  Are you planning on dining out this weekend?

The Ravenous Baby: 17 Weeks

How far along? 17 Weeks Exactly

Food size: Onion

Total weight gain/loss: 6 lbs

Exercise: 4 workouts done!  2 BodyPump, 1 Spin, and 1 Zumba

Sleep/Dreams:  Sleeping pretty well!  Had a pretty scary dream last night that I was in the London Eye riding around and suddenly got flung in the water.  I kept sinking then finally was able to break out of it and get to the surface.  It was not fun.

Movement: Starting to feel the "bubbles popping" feeling!

Symptoms: Not many, woohoo! I think I'm finally in the smooth sailing part of pregnancy.

Preggo Brain Moments:  I feel like it's setting in earlier this time around.  Put an empty bowl in the microwave and started it before I realized it did not have food in it.

Food cravings: Everything I saw on the Food Network show, Guilty Pleasures.  Duck fat fries, yes!  Donuts, yes!  That show is dangerous.

Food aversions:  None that I can think of this week.

Maternity Clothes: New maternity shirt from old navy that I'm wearing in the photo.  Officially replaced all non-maternity jeans with maternity.

Belly Button/ Stretch Marks: Still in, and none yet.

Gender: We find out on June 29!

What I miss: In the mood for some white wine.

Best moment this past week:  Lots of good ones!  Watching Wyatt play at the ice cream social, and date night of course!

What I am looking forward to this week: Getting my hair done, need to get that premature gray covered up.  Plus it's a nice little mommy break!

Food & Fun

Those two words definitely described the weekend.... well, every weekend pretty much.  It started off on Friday night with our neighborhood's ice cream social.  Wyatt definitely enjoyed the games and free sundae.  So did mama.

On Saturday Jay woke up with Wyatt so I could relax a bit.  Jay brings me coffee in bed and I watch an episode or two of Arrested Development on Netflix.  I love this new ritual!

Saturday night was date night.  There are still lots of restaurants to try out in Tallahassee, this time it was Sidecar.  The food was great!  Too bad I couldn't have some drinks to go along with it.  One of the highlights were the Thai Duck Wings.  So unique and delicious.  Full review coming soon.

Sunday was a big cooking day!  I started off with churning up my homemade ice cream.  David Lebovitz's Vanilla Ice Cream is my go-to recipe.  It is amazing.  Then Jay started rolling out his famous meatballs.

While Wyatt napped, I made a Strawberry Upside Down Cake.  It was hard not to dig into this baby right away.

While we were waiting for our dinner guests to arrive, Wyatt heard our neighbor's lawnmower and Wyatt wanted to go see it.  Apparently "seeing lawnmower" meant sitting on my lap so he wouldn't get too close to it.  We took some quality selfies while we listened.

We polished off dinner so quickly that I didn't even take a picture of the main meal... which involved Baked Ziti, Chicken Parm, Meatballs & Sausage.  But I did get a great pic of our first course, another one of Jay's famous dishes... Antipasto Salad (not pictured, my boring non-meat salad, dang pregnancy).

Even though I was pretty freakin full, I had to have that dessert!  It was worth every extra calorie.  I wanted seconds because it was that tasty, but then my stomach might have just exploded.  Kinda like my head after watching the Game of Thrones finale...WTF?

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?  Did you watch Game of Thrones?

Exercise: 4 workouts done!  1 BodyPump, 1 Spin, 1 Sculpting Class and 1 Zumba

Sleep/Dreams:  Sleeping pretty well!

Movement: Not yet

Symptoms: Not many, woohoo! I think I'm finally in the smooth sailing part of pregnancy.

Food cravings: Mac & cheese... I have a really good recipe and am very tempted to make it.

Food aversions:  None that I can think of this week.

Maternity Clothes:  The outfit I'm wearing is all non-maternity.  I'm still on the lookout for cute shorts.

Belly Button/ Stretch Marks: Still in, and none yet.

Gender: We find out on June 29!

What I miss: I need more coffee.

Best moment this past week:  Getting to hear the baby's heartbeat on Monday at my 16 week appt!  Wyatt wasn't too impressed.

What I am looking forward to this week: Orange is the New Black is back on Netflix with new episodes on June 12th, woohoo!  Happy and sad that the Game of Thrones season finale is on Sunday, it always goes by so fast.  I want to see Sansa do something horrific to Ramsay... is that bad?

What TV shows are you currently obsessing over?

Sittin on the Dock of The Bay

This review is long overdue.  On our way to our Destin weekend, Wyatt woke up just after we got off the interstate.  My hunger bitchitis was about to kick in, and I was looking at Yelp for the best and closest place to eat.  The Bay had awesome reviews, and was on the water... done and done.

Our eyes might have been a little bigger than our tummies, so we did get quite alot.  The menu was so good!  First up were the unique and delicious Point Washington Rolls.  Spring rolls stuffed with alligator (yup, that's right, gator), tasso and poblano.  These were savory and spicy perfection.  Even Wyatt liked them!

Wyatt spent the rest of his time munching on Pirate's Booty and eating his fish fingers.  He was surprisingly well behaved, especially after a long car ride.

My main dish was the Lobster Roll.  I LOVE lobster rolls, and I couldn't pass it up when I saw it on the menu.  I have to say... it was one of the better ones I've ever had.  Perfectly toasted slightly sweet roll, tender chunks of lobster, and not overly sauced up.  My side dish, Potatoes Montgomery, was equally awesome.  It was like a potato au gratin with sweet and regular potatoes, with just enough cheese and onion in the mix.  I have to try to make this at home one day.

Jay got the Faux Ya Ya, a take on shrimp and grits.  From the menu... Grilled polenta cakes with smoked fontina and Romano cheese, topped with a sauté of pancetta and prosciutto, crimini mushrooms, arugula and cream crowned with spiced shrimp.  I stole a bite or two and was glad I did.  The crispy polenta was such a nice complement to the sauce and shrimp.  Jay said it was one of his fave "shrimp & grits" he's had so far.

Then the grand finale, Key Lime Pie.  This delicious slice looked so gigantic, but we polished that sucker off pretty quickly.  The perfect ending to a perfect meal.

Have you ever tried gator before?  Shrimp & grits?

My First Maternity Stitch Fix

I was so excited to finally sign up for Stitch Fix!  It's not offered in Canada, so reading everyone's reviews made me so jealous.  I was even happier when I moved to Florida and found out they were going to offer maternity wear. Plus I'm not a big shopper...and Wyatt is a horrible shopping buddy.  It's a win-win for me.

They definitely do a good job on the packaging!  I especially love the handy little fashion flash cards, I'm the worst accessorizer ever.  Now the "fun" part begins... trying on all the goods.

#1: Earrings
I didn't even open these up.  I'm a stud kinda gal, and rarely wear anything dangly either.  Hoops, fuhgetaboutit.  Return.

#2: Navy Tank Top & #4: Maxi Skirt
I knew just unfolding it would be bad...the way it fit me made me look ginormous.  Return.

Maxi skirts are one of my fave things to wear, you can dress them up or down.  I liked the flowiness of it and black is one of my fave clothing colors.  Keep.

#3: Blue Cowel Neck Top
I loved the color, a bright royal blue!  But alas, those shoulders were no bueno.  Return.

#5: V-neck Dress
I liked the style immediately, but I didn't think all those thin lines would be flattering and boy was I right!  Besides the optical illusion that was occurring in the mirror, it was definitely too tight.  Return.

The choices for my first Stitch Fix were mostly good ones.  The poor stylist didn't know I hated hoop earrings.  I'm looking forward to getting my next one.

The Ravenous Baby: 15 Weeks

Time for another update!  I can't believe it's been a week already.  I definitely feel like this pregnancy has been faster than Wyatt's.  It must be because I have a crazy 2 year-old to chase around.

How far along? 15 weeks + 1 day

Food size: Apple

Total weight gain/loss: 4.4 lbs (no gain this week)

Exercise: Only worked out once, bad!  Wyatt had a severely runny nose for a few days, and I felt bad bringing him to the gym.  I should have worked out at home but I just wanted to take advantage of his nap by watching Married at First Sight... my #1 guilty pleasure show!

Sleep/Dreams:  Sleeping pretty well!  I wish my 6:00 am alarm clock would sleep in once in a while though.

Movement: Not yet

Symptoms: The headaches continue, ugh.  I had a doozy over the weekend.

Food cravings: I really want a burger... but haven't had one yet.

Food aversions:  The cold chicken thing still, but that's it.

Maternity Clothes:  Those jeans in the photo are maternity jeans from my pregnancy with Wyatt.  My first Stitchfix went okay.  I liked a lot of it but most of it was unflattering.  Review coming tomorrow!

Belly Button/ Stretch Marks: Still in, and none yet.

Gender: We find out on June 29!

What I miss: Wine...beer...wine...beer

Best moment this past week:  Our weekend in Destin!

What I am looking forward to this week: Madre coming for a visit before her big European vacation.

Weekend in Paradise

We had a short, but amazing weekend in Destin. I was in college the last time I was there so it had been a while! The drive there from Tallahassee wasn't bad at all... a little over 2 1/2 hours. Wyatt took his nap in the car so it worked out perfectly. As soon as we got there we had an amazing lunch at The Bay, where this kick-@$$ key lime pie came from.  I want more!  Full review of The Bay coming this week.

We go there a little too early to check in to the hotel, so we wasted some time at Alvin's "tropical department store", there are tons of those there!

As soon as we got to our room at the Embassy Suites, Wyatt started lining up his cars.  I was only going to bring a dozen or so, but Wyatt packed all of them up on his own.  Those were the only toys we brought for him and it sure kept him entertained.

Then we hit the beach!  Wyatt was dying to get into that crystal clear water.

I love that Embassy Suites has a nightly happy hour.  I was pounding cranberry and vodka soda, and jealous of Jay's beers.  Wyatt had fun munching on some grilled cheese while he was strolling around the booth.  He was even waving hi to himself.

Saturday was another great day...we are so lucky to have friends in Destin with a boat.  They took us to Crab Island, a shallow area near the harbor that gets packed!

Wyatt was doing great for his first time on a boat!  He was a little wobbly, but then his sea legs kicked in.  But he did not like when the boat was turned on, he kept saying "no motor".  The kid is not a fan of loud noises, but he sure isn't afraid to yell.

Since Wyatt didn't take a nap on Saturday, we were trying to avoid going straight back to the hotel so he wouldn't fall asleep too early.  Distraction with ice cream always does the trick!  Bruster's was a great place to get a treat.

We had to check out by 11 on Sunday, so we ate an early breakfast at the hotel... love the breakfast at Embassy Suites.  Plus I loved even more that I didn't have to do any dishes over the weekend, woohoo.  Then we headed straight to the beach for an hour more of playtime before we had to get on the road.

It was a great getaway!  We hope to go back there again before we leave Tallahassee for our next destination.  What did you do on your last weekend getaway?
